GAME HIGHLIGHTS: Again defense was great in our come-from-behind victory. B.Ren made a leaping catch at second base with runners at second and third and J.Giannini snagged a line drive at shortstop with the bases loaded. Our offense was fueled by J.Nesbitt (two RBI), G.Toth with the game-winning hit (three RBI) and T.Lazzaroni (one RBI). Pitching was very steady again. We used five pitchers: S.Dohr, G.Toth, J.Nesbitt, P.Steiner (who tallied the win) and E.Geldermann (who got the save).

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: In the battle of two undefeated teams, the Glenview 3 Royals came out the winners leading all the way in a close game. E.Geldermann scored three times and had five RBI, K.Cullum also scored three times with one RBI, J.Giannini and T.Lazzaroni both scored twice and G.Toth and J.Crowley both scored once, giving us 12 runs, our highest output so far this season. P.Steiner had two doubles and three RBI, B.Ren had two RBI and G.Gottfried was on base three out of four times. We used six pitchers: G.Toth (who tallied the win), E. Reichert, J.Nesbitt, K.Cullum, P.Steiner and E.Geldermann. They all conspired to keep a good Ken-Winn 4 Yankees team in check.

Glenview 3 Royals
Glenview 8 Cubs
19-7 win (4-0)

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: This was another good team effort by all the Royals.
On offense, E.Geldermann, P.Steiner and J.Nesbitt led the team with nine of the 14 hits. Also G.Gottfried and J.Crowley combined for seven walks and seven runs scored. The defense was once again solid. S.Dohr (win) gave us a good start by only giving up one hit in the first two innings and picking off a runner at second. He was followed by J.Crowley, J.Nesbitt and K.Cullum who came into the sixth to close. The Cubs were threatening in the third inning with bases loaded but J.Crowley cleanly handled a grounder that turned into a 1-2-3 double play.
Three key players were missing for this game but this team stayed focused and played good fundamental baseball in a big win over a good Cubs team 19-7.

Glenview 4 White Sox
Glenview 3 Royals
5-12 win (5-0)

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: The score does not reflect the game, we won 5-12. However the Glenview White Sox held us to only three hits. And they only had three hits against us.
The difference was some heads-up base running: J.Giannini, E.Geldermann and E.Reichert all stole home. Also some good pitching: G.Toth (credited with the win) pitched two good innings; E.Reichert pitched his way out of a bases loaded no outs jam with two big strikeouts and allowed no runs in one inning; P.Steiner pitched two innings, giving up only one run with five strikeouts; J.Nesbitt again proved his worth with one inning of fine pitching and E.Geldermann had a three-up-three-down perfect seventh to maintain his spot as our closer (E.Geldermann also nailed a runner at third base while catching in the sixth inning). Special note: T.Lazzaroni was on base four out of five times showing why he is our lead off batter.
     Royals remain undefeated!

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: Our game started about 40 minutes late due to confusion about which James Park diamond we were going to play on. One diamond had the corner of the soccer field at second base and the other diamond had a group of young men playing a pickup game. We finally persuaded the young men to leave the field. Once the game started, the Royals were on fire: we batted around with a home run from K.Cullum and base hits by Joe, Peter, and Justin. Then the temperature dropped 20 degrees and the wind and rain came in. The game was called in the first inning. Royals remain undefeated!

Ken-Winn 1 Diamondbacks

5-16 win (6-0)

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: We faced a fearless Ken-Winn 1 Diamondbacks team with one of the better records in Fall Ball. Even though they were able to get nine hits, our pitching staff (G.Toth with the win, S.Dohr, K.Cullum and E.Geldermann) only gave up three walks. Our defense was great as usual, starting with a run-down in the first inning, E.Geldermann at third base starting the play with heads-up defense with E.Reichert, T.Lazzaroni and G.Toth all getting involved, and we doubled up the runner trying to get back to first base to end an early threat. We also had some fine catches in the outfield by J.Giannini and J.Crowley to end some scoring opportunities.
On offense we had a hit parade led by team captain E.Geldermann with three hits (including a triple), K.Cullum, J.Giannini, P.Steiner (who also stole home) with two hits each and T.Lazzaroni, E. Reichert, B.Ren and J.Crowley getting base hits for a total of 13 hits, scoring 16 runs in an impressive 5-16 win.

10-15 loss (6-1)

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: Royals suffer first defeat of the season. Not to take anything away from a very solid Portage Park Red team, the Royals came out very flat and had a very bad inning giving the Red Sox a come-from-behind victory in the bottom of the sixth. First time this year we had a blow-out inning against us.
My thanks to all the Royals (all 12) for showing up to this game, as it was kind of cold. And a special thanks to Glen Gottfried for his great job umpiring the game, when the scheduled umpire was a last-minute scratch.

9-11 loss (6-2)

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: It should have been a fall classic with two of the better teams going against each other.

By the end of the third inning the score was 1-0 in our favor. We had scored in the top of the third when G.Gottfried got on base and scored on K.Cullum's hard-hit RBI grounder.

In the top of the fourth we scored on a hit by P.Steiner to start the inning and a long fly ball by E.Reichert to get the second RBI. At the end of the fourth, the score was 2-5, Reds leading.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Royals came charging back, J.Giannini getting on base, stealing second and going to third on T.Lazzaroni's base hit. Then he stole home to ignite the Royals' offense. K.Cullum got on base and E.Geldermann got a base hit followed by P.Steiner's bases-clearing double into center field. The Royals batted around, with a walk to S.Dohr to end the inning. Royals led 8-5.

After late-inning patience at the plate by the Reds, we went into the seventh inning trailing 8-11. P.Steiner led off the inning with a base hit, stole second and third and scored on a grounder by J.Nesbitt. However our rally stalled, and we were able only to score the one run on their ace pitcher, who up to this point in Fall Ball had a 0.00 ERA. Final score 9-11 Reds.

Defensively, we started out playing our normal game with G.Toth pitching the first two innings, allowing no hits and striking out three batters. S.Dohr pitched the third, off whom the Reds got their first hit. The next batter hit a long fly ball caught by J.Giannini, who then relayed to T.Lazzaroni, who threw to first base to catch the runner trying to get back. In the fourth inning S.Dohr got the first two Reds to ground out and things looked good.

But then the whole game changed. The umpire seemed to lose sight of the strike zone. The fourth inning ended with seven walks and one hit. The Reds scored five runs and led 2 - 5. The fifth inning was more of the same: our pitchers (four of them) in those two innings had nine batters with two strikes on them and could not get the third called strike on any player even when the ball seemed to be thrown right down the middle. Our catcher, E.Geldermann, was worried about being thrown out of the game because he questioned more than a few calls. We allowed six runs in the fifth. In total, the Reds scored 11 runs in those two innings on 13 walks and and only three hits.

[Webmaster's note: these umpiring lapses also were observed by the Reds' coach. Click here to read his account of this game.]

Our whole team was down but we still tried to make a comeback, and I was proud of them. Sometimes that's the way the game goes, it's all part of baseball.

All and all, it was a pleasure to coach such dedicated players and parents. I couldn't have done it without the help of coaches Skip Steiner and Mark Nesbitt. Also, special thanks to Tom Kendall, the "webmaster".
