In the top of the seventh, the Morton Grove Cardinals' Ceisel led off with a bomb that went to the playground at Central Park. It was a stand up triple because of the great cut-off by the Edgebrook-Sauganash Giants. One out later, Ceisel scored on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the seventh the Giants were down 5-4. The Giants' J.Luke started the inning with a leadoff walk and then Mijatovich hit a shot to center field that should have been caught but fell for a double. The Cardinals went to a shift with their defense. With the season ending run on second Senensky fought back and struck out the next two Giants. He walked Van Leur to load the bases. Senensky then struck out Shea to end this great game. This was a great game but it was sad to see one of these teams lose. Mijatovich pitched great for the Giants. And the Giants' Devey was even louder than usual.

6. GAME DATE:
OPPONENT:
DIAMOND (HOME/AWAY):
SCORE (RECORD):
PITCHERS & INNINGS:

Sat., June 29
Skokie Indians Newtown Phantoms
Laramie (away)
8-6 (5-1)
De Guzman (2), Ceisel (2), Senensky (4)

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: In a game which was truly a playoff game the Morton Grove Cardinals edged the Skokie Indians Phantoms 8-6 in eight innings. De Guzman started for the Cardinals and went two innings. He had a strong second inning after a shaky first. Ceisel came in and pitched the third and fourth, giving up two runs. The Cardinals' number one pitcher Senensky came in to pitch the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth. Senensky gave up one run. The Cardinals' Kabet was a major help!! He had three hits after going zero for the season. In the bottom of the seventh, the Phantoms' Rammel led off with a groundout to Rodi at third base, then Bolden sent a beautiful bunt down the first base line that went for a hit. One pitch later and he was on second with a stolen base. Rashid then also grounded out to Rodi at third. With the winning run at third, the cardinals manager Hagopian went out to talk to his pitcher. The team had the confidence in Senensky to walk the Phantoms' two big hitters, Hendricks and Hackett. With the bases loaded and two outs, Senensky and Roveda had a classic duel, a nine-pitch at bat. Senensky got Roveda to go after his slider in the dirt. Dukes made a great stop on the ball and touched home to get out of the inning. In the top of the eighth the Cardinals had the bottom of the order coming up: six, seven and eight in the lineup. Lewis led off with a walk, Rodi then singled up the middle, Kabet then singled to load the bases. One out later Abbas hit a grounder to the Phantoms' pitcher Hackett, who fired home with a bad throw, which led to a run and left the bases still loaded. Dukes then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Rodi, who tagged up.

This was a great team win for the Cardinals! The Cardinals are peaking at the right time. Next up is the strong Skokie Indians Bulldogs! That game will be at Laramie park on Sunday, June 30th, at 7:30 PM. The winner of that game gets the very tough job of trying to beat the Edgebrook-Sauganash Cubs two days in a row after the Cubs only lost one game all year.

7. GAME DATE:
OPPONENT:
DIAMOND (HOME/AWAY):
SCORE (RECORD):
PITCHERS & INNINGS:

Sun., June 30
Skokie Indians Walton Bulldogs
Laramie (away)
6-8 (5-2)
Lewis (2), Ceisel (1), Senensky (4)

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: In a very tough fought game between the Skokie Indians Bulldogs and the Morton Grove Cardinals, the Bulldogs won by the score of 8-6. This was also the #8 vs. #6 seeds. Both teams looked better then their seedings. Lewis started for the Cardinals and pitched two great innings. In the third he got in trouble and gave up a few runs. With not much rope to use, Lewis was pulled for Ceisel. Ceisel pitched to one batter, who touched him up for a double. Senensky came in and help settle things down for the Cardinals. In the bottom of the second Lewis, strode to the plate with runners on second and third. All the Cardinals wanted was a base hit but he did even better!! Lewis hit a bomb that had to go at least 300 feet for a three-run home run. In the top of the seventh the Cardinals were down two runs. Abbas led off and was doing anything he could to get on base. The Bulldogs' Harvey threw two called strikes past Abbas and then struck him out. Dukes then walked, and one out later he stole second base. With two outs Ceisel was up 3-1 in the count. He hit a line drive that the second baseman put his hands up and caught in self-defense to end the game. The game would have gotten very interesting if that hot smash had gotten by the Bulldogs' second baseman.

All in all, it was a great season for the Morton Grove Cardinals. This year's Cardinals did not have as much talent as past teams. But one thing this team had was heart. Going 8-7-1 in the regular season, the Cardinals were the #8 seed. After pounding the Edgebrook-Sauganash Phillies in the first round, the Cardinals had the Edgebrook-Sauganash league on the ropes in the second round, until the Cubs came back behind T.Kane's pitching. Facing elimination, the Cardinals then pounded the Skokie Youth Cardinals. In another elimination game, the Cardinals edged the Skokie Youth Diamondbacks. Then the Cardinals upset the very good #2 seed Edgebrook-Sauganash Giants. This was a great game that went the Cards' way. Then in the final four, the Cardinals beat the Skokie Indians Phantoms in another great, heart stopping contest. But the Cards ran out of juice against the Skokie Indians Bulldogs. The Cardinals went five-and-two in the playoffs, including four-and-one this week. In all, the Cardinals tallied five wins in an extremely intensive week-plus of the playoffs after getting only eight wins in two months of the regular season.
