GAME HIGHLIGHTS: In a game that see-sawed early, the Edgebrook-Sauganash Giants outlasted the Edgebrook-Sauganash Yankees 11-5. Both teams entered the game with identical 10-2 records. With his team's pitching staff depleted for this game, Creely pitched four strong innings for the Yankees but was victimized by sloppy defense. The blazingly fierce sun finally took its toll in the fifth when the Giants scored four runs, three after two outs, to take control of the game. The Giants also played one of their worst games defensively, making many physical and mental mistakes as they fell behind 5-4 after three innings. But a key defensive play by Major League call-up Dongo kept the Giants in the game and down by only a run after three. With one out in the fifth, young Mr. Dongo was not through, as he doubled and scored the tying run. With runners on first and second and two outs, Van Leur fouled off two 3-2 pitches before sending a towering double to left-center field, scoring Mijatovich and Shea to give the Giants an 8-5 lead, a lead that they would never relinquish. Mijatovich pitched four scoreless innings to pick up the win and was aided by the outstanding play of Litton at second base. |

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: In a tremendous, tension filled game, the Edgebrook-Sauganash Giants were defeated 5 to 4 by the Morton Grove Cardinals. The Cardinals' pitchers were great as they limited the hard hitting Giants to only four runs. De Guzman, Ceisel and Senensky pitched out of tough jams in the second, fifth and seventh innings respectively. Ceisel gave the Cardinals two shutout innings and pitched out of a runners on second and third with only one out jam in the fifth to keep his team tied. Senensky showed what a true all-star he is by striking out three Giants with the tying run on third and the winning run on second with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Mijatovich paced the nine-hit Giants attack with three doubles, while Van Leur and Devey each had two RBI's. On the mound, Mijatovich retired nine of the ten men he faced, while Van Leur pitched four strong innings. The Giants fought hard all year, down to the final pitch and finished their season with a stellar 15-and-four record, which enabled them to finish as champions of the American League and have the number two seeding overall. Thanks to the parents and families who supported the Giants all year, but most of all thanks to the players, who proved once again that baseball is truly a team game. -- John Van Leur, manager |
